Prof. Hardev Singh Deepak (Raag Mala Samrat)

Prof. Hardev Singh Deepak was introduced to music from a very young age. The first time he got onto the stage was at the age of 4, and he sang a ‘Dharmak Geet’ titled ‘Shaheedi Gaddi Punja Sahib’ for his first performance. Between the age of 7 to 8 years old, he used to perform folk songs on stage while playing a ‘tumbi’. Later on, he got more seriously inclined towards music and began learning Gurmat Sangeet and Shastri Sangeet. One of his main influences was his teacher, Prof. Gurbaksh Singh from Chandigarh, who had guided him in Gurmat Sangeet. Prof Gurbaksh Singh himself was a graduate of the Shaheed Sikh Missionary College in Amritsar, which had produced some of the finest Kirtaniyas in the Sikh Panth. At the same time, Prof. Hardev Singh Ji also picked up many intricacies of classical music from various accomplished Muslim and Hindu singers.

Prof. Hardev Singh Ji has also accompanied many renowned Kirtaniyas and furthered his knowledge and skills with their guidance. He accompanied Bhai Nanak Singh Safri from Sri Ganga Nagar between 1979 to 1981 and subsequently he was on the side harmonium with Principal Baldev Singh, with whom he performed Kirtan at Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar between 1982 to 1983. He has done Kirtan at all five ‘Takhats’ and has traveled abroad on numerous occasions for Kirtan. Prof. Hardev Singh Ji has also dedicated his life to teaching Kirtan, especially to the poor. He taught Kirtan for 10 years without charging any fees, while simultaneously performing Kirtan duties at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Mukherjee Nagar. He has also taught in Hazoor Sahib, Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib and the Sikh Missionary Center in Dehradun.

In 1992, he came to Malaysia and served as the ‘Granthi’ in Gurdwara Sahib Ashby Road in the city of Ipoh. He spent about 2 and a half years in Malaysia and became quite close to the locals. His Kirtan and Katha was much appreciated by the Sangat and he would be invited for Kirtan programs regularly at various Gurdwaras all over Malaysia. While he was in Malaysia, he became very close to late Dato’ Paramjeet Singh (brother of Dr. Pritam Singh ‘Nagoke’) and they would meet daily for evening tea in the Gurdwara. When his best friend passed away suddenly, Prof. Hardev Singh Ji made the decision to go back to India and he left shortly after.

Prof. Hardev Singh Ji is particularly adept at singing Guldastas. One of his popular compositions is a Guldasta composed of 21 Raags, which he sang for the first time in Malaysia during a 3-day Kirtan competition for children held in Wadda Gurdwara, Ipoh. He was one of the event judges along with Master Hari Dev (student of renowned Master Rattan of Sham Chaurasi Gharana), Bhai Didar Singh (a local tabla player from Penang), Bhai Gurcharan Singh (a violinist from Singapore) and Giani Gurcharan Singh Bhaur. Besides that, he has composed a Guldasta comprising of all 62 Raags of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji (31 Nidharit Raags and 31 Mishrat Raags). He also has composed a Guldasta made up of Raag Gauri and its 11 ‘Parikars’ or variations. Due to his mastery over Raags, in 2004 he earned the title ‘Raag Mala Samrat’ in Mumbai. In 2009/2010, nine Shabads of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Ji sung by Prof. Hardev Singh Ji were telecasted on ETC Punjabi. He has also appeared on Doordarshan’s famous program ‘Kudrat Ke Sab Bande’. Despite his accomplishments, Prof. Hardev Singh Ji is humble in nature and attributes his good fortune and achievements to the grace of Guru Ji.
