Prof. Harchand Singh Kalsi

Professor Harchand Singh Kalsi was born to Bibi Permeshwari Devi and Sardar Sajjan Singh Bhamra in the village of Kishanpura, district Ferozepur, in 1923. His maternal great grandfather, Bhai Partap Singh was a well known raagi in Dharamkot. At the age of 5, Professor Harchand Singh Ji lost his eyesight due to chicken pox, but that did not stop him from pursuing his passion for music. Between 1932 to 1934, he moved to Baghapurana road in Moga, where most of the raagis around the area lived. He started his initial training there with Bhai Ganga Singh, Bhai Mewah Singh and Bhai Chanan Singh. During the same period, there was a famous sarangi player living in Moga by the name of Sadak Ali, and Professor Harchand Singh also received some training from him. He then furthered his pursuit in musical knowledge and training with renowned singer Pandit Krishna Rao Shankar from the Gwalior gharana of classical music. Professor Harchand Singh Ji was also adept in playing many instruments such as dilruba, sitar and violin. He has also served as Hazoori raagi in Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar for some time. Following his service in Amritsar, he moved to Moga and established a Gurmat Sangeet Vidyala. In 1948, the Maharaja of Faridkot started a radio station and Professor Harchand Singh was appointed as director of the station. He has also served as Hazoori raagi at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib in New Delhi. Subsequently he returned to Ludhiana to complete an MA in Music and he also started to perform at the Jalandhar Radio station. He passed away on 18th October 2003 in Ludhiana. The Shabad below in Raag Chandrakauns was recorded by Sardar Amir Singh from Singapore and I stumbled across it in one of his ‘Guldasta’ tapes which usually was a mix of Kirtanis singing in raags. I doubt that Professor Harchand Singh Ji visited Singapore, but perhaps Sardar Amir Singh Ji had recorded it during one of his visits to India.
