Prof. Chanan Singh Ji Sewak hails from the village of Attowal located in the Hoshiarpur district of Punjab. He was born into the home of Sardar Sital Singh Ji and Mata Karam Kaur Ji in 1947. At the age of 7, he contracted chicken pox and lost his sight in both eyes as a result of the infection. His parents tried various treatments but unfortunately his vision did not return. When he turned 15, he decided to take the path of music and became a student of the renowned Prof. Chanan Singh Majboor. At that time, Majboor Ji was the principal of the Amar Sangeet Vidhyala located in Hoshiarpur. Prof. Chanan Singh Ji Sewak stayed with Majboor Ji for 10 years learning the fine art of Gurmat Sangeet. He was trained in both vocal and tabla but his focus was more on vocals in which he attained a Masters in Arts (MA). While he was a student, he also formed a ‘jatha’ in 1965 and started to perform Kirtan locally within Hoshiarpur. Due to an unfortunate accident in 1972, his father passed away. In the same year, Majboor Ji left for a tour to the UK and the responsibility of the Vidhyala was left in the able hands of Prof. Chanan Singh Ji Sewak. He served in the Vidhyala for approximately 2 years before being selected as a Hazoori Raagi in Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Anandpur Sahib by the Jathedar then. He began his duty on the 17th of January 1974 and continues to serve in Keshgarh Sahib until today. The local Sangat appreciated his Kirtan very much and their jatha’s daily duty was fixed during the Kalyan Di Chaunki. Prof. Ji has had various ‘saathis’ over the years, of whom most were his students. One of his long time ‘saathis’ was Bhai Balbir Singh Ji who accompanied him on tabla for 21 years.
Prof. Chanan Singh Ji Sewak has also traveled extensively throughout his career. His first travel abroad was to Sri Nankana Sahib during the Gurpurab of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1977. Next, he went to England in 1978 and spent 1 year touring around various cities. His second trip to England was in 1982 and he was there for around 6 months. In total, he has made almost 15 tours to England. Besides that, he has also traveled to Canada on various occasions. His first tour to Canada was in 1984, during which he stayed in Vancouver for 1 and a half years. He also made a three month trip to Malaysia in 1996 and one tour to Thailand in 2007.
Prof. Ji got married to Bibi Ravinder Kaur Ji in 1986 and they are blessed with 5 children; 3 daughters and 2 sons. All of their children have attained degrees in music alongside their formal education. One of their daughters just got married recently in India while their other children have settled in Canada. Currently, Prof. Chanan Singh Ji Sewak performs Kirtan in Keshgarh Sahib once a week and aside from that, he also receives many invitations to perform at Kirtan Darbars. He spends most of his time teaching Gurmat Sangeet to students and to date he has taught around 1000 students. If anyone has more recordings of Prof. Chanan Singh Sewak to share, please contact us.
