Principal Chanan Singh Ji Majboor was born on 2nd February 1935 in the district of Hoshiarpur. He was one of six brothers and all of them were very interested in music. All of them pursued this interest and his brothers are accomplished raagis as well. This includes his younger brother Professor Gurdev Singh Phull, who is currently based in Canada.
Principal Chanan Singh Ji started his initial training at home and then became a student of the renowned Professor Darshan Singh Komal, who was a student of Bhai Sain Ditta Ji. Other notable students of Professor Darshan Singh Komal include Bhai Didar Singh Nangal, Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi, Bhai Beant Singh Bijli, Bhai Gian Singh Surjit and Bhai Inderjit Singh (Derby). Principal Chanan Singh Ji also attained a few titles in music such as ‘Sangeet Bhaskar’, ‘Sangeet Parveen’ and ‘Tabla Parbhakar’. He was also an accomplished writer and has published two books of poems (kavi).
