Bhai Sarup Singh Thawar was the father of the renowned Kirtani, Bhai Charanjit Singh Thawar, whose contributions to Gurbani Kirtan have continued to inspire many Kirtanis to this day. In addition to Bhai Charanjit Singh, Bhai Sarup Singh was the father of several other sons: Bhai Sundar Singh, Bhai Prabhu Singh, Bhai Santokh Singh, Bhai Gurmukh Singh, Bhai Kirtan Singh, Bhai Preetman Singh, and Bhai Manjeet Singh.
Bhai Sarup Singh’s brother, Prof. Milap Singh, was a celebrated classical vocalist who received numerous accolades in classical music competitions. He trained under several distinguished Ustads, including Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan, the legendary maestro of the Patiala Gharana. Bhai Sarup Singh often accompanied Prof. Milap Singh on the Mridang and Dholki during Kirtan programs as well as classical performances.
While Bhai Sarup Singh’s own Kirtan style was more modest compared to his brother’s classical sophistication, he was deeply respected within the Sikh community for his devotion and musical contributions.
