Bhai Pritpal Singh Bedi, born on December 25, 1963, in Kolkata, is a distinguished Sikh kirtan artist who has dedicated his life to devotional music. Now 61 years old, he continues his musical service to the community with unwavering devotion, despite managing Type 1 diabetes.

Early Life and Musical Journey

Bhai Pritpal Singh’s musical journey began under the guidance of his father, Bhai Mohanpal Singh Bedi, who was visually impaired yet deeply committed to kirtan. From the tender age of 12, young Pritpal would accompany his father on the tabla while pursuing his education. His dedication to learning was largely self-directed, with Bhai Rajinder Singh ji (Singapore Walle) serving as his inspiration and role model.

Musical Excellence and Recognition

Known for his melodious voice and distinctive style, Bhai Pritpal Singh has earned widespread recognition throughout Kolkata and neighboring cities. His musical prowess reflects years of dedicated practice and spiritual devotion, creating a unique sound that resonates with audiences across different communities.

Service at Gurdwaras

Bhai Pritpal Singh’s professional kirtan career, commenced at Gurdwara Bara Sikh Sangat in Burra Bazaar, Kolkata. His most significant tenure was as Hazoori Ragi at Gurdwara Sant Kutiya, Kolkata, where he served devotedly for 19 years. Subsequently, he continued his service as Hazoori Ragi at Gurdwara Behala, Kolkata, for six years. Unfortunately, health challenges eventually prevented him from maintaining regular gurdwara commitments, leading him to transition to private kirtan programs upon request.

International and National Contributions

His musical service has transcended geographical boundaries, with notable performances at Bangkok Gurdwara and Phuket Gurdwara on multiple occasions. Throughout India, he has given his kirtan sewa on various Gurpurabs and special occasions across numerous cities including Bangalore, Shillong, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Corba, Ranchi, Dhanbad, Asansol, Raniganj, Dhubri Sahib, Alwar, Kharagpur, and many others.

Bhai Pritpal Singh Bedi’s life exemplifies, dedication to spiritual service, through music. Despite health challenges, his commitment to kirtan remains unwavering.   2. I have known Bhai Pritipal Singh ji Bedi since his and my childhood days when his father used to perform kirtan.
    Bhai Pritipal Singh has evolved as one the very renowned Ragi who has a very soothing and mesmerising voice.
    I have had the privilege of listening to him hundreds of times!
    Mrs Bedi too has a vast knowledge of Sikhism and Sikh history and has been actively involved in various philosophical events!

  4. I have my childhood memories of Bedi saheb doing Gurbani gayen ( Kirtan) in various Gurdwara saheb in Kolkata.
    Awesome voice and understanding of Gurbani pronounciation .
    No parallel to talent of Bedi saheb in Eastern India .

I have grown up listening to soulful Keertan by his father SD Mohanpal Singh and then Bhiai Pritpal Singh took over the legacy.His soul stirring keertan seems to touch the inner core of the heart and one transcends to another world.In fact he not only sang the Laavan for my Anand Karaj but also for both my sons.May Waheguru continue to bless him with health so that the Sangat continues to be blessed with soulful renditions.

He has a unique style of story telling along with Kirtans that helps everyone understand the meaning and feel more involved with the Kirtan.   8. Priypalji’s soulful kirtan has touched so many of our hearts. He sings with his heart and soul , spreading the message of our Gurus. He also taught me Kirtan when I was a child and also taught me the basics of the tabla.
