Bhai Pal Singh (Nankana Sahib)

Bhai Pal Singh was one of half of the famous duo of Bhai Jaswant Singh & Pal Singh, better known as Jasa-Pala. They belong to the Rababi heritage of music and their father Sant Ranjodh Singh initiated his 3 sons, Bhai Jaswant Singh, Bhai Pal Singh and Bhai Gulzar Singh into music from a very young age. Bhai Pala Ji also went on to learn from Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan of Patiala Gharana. The ‘jori’ of Jasa-Pala went on to gain much admiration from the Sangat and respect from their contemporaries. They were head Raagis of Nankana Sahib before the division of Punjab and following the partition, they moved to Patiala along with many other Rababi families. An interesting fact that was narrated to me was that just before partition, Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji was cast to play Hari Singh Nahlua in a movie that was about to be made about Maharaja Ranjit Singh. I was told that he was cast because he had the physique to portray Hari Singh Nahlua. Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji was 6 feet 10 inches tall. Unfortunately, due to the events that unfolded, the movie never got made. Another interesting fact, when the entire family moved to Patiala, Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji got left behind in newly formed Pakistan and was missing for 6 months. He had to fight his way through and somehow he ended up at the doorstep of the family’s new home in Patiala 6 months later. As for Bhai Pal Singh Ji, he did not have any children so as a result, his siblings named all their children with the suffix ‘Pal’ so that they all became his children too. That tradition is continued in their family to this day. I visited their neighborhood in Patiala a few years ago and met some of their grandchildren. I was told that when Bhai Pal Singh Ji did his daily Riyaz, his voice could be heard throughout the neighborhood. I witnessed that first hand in Bhai Kishanpal Ji who was Bhai Jaswant Singh Ji’s youngest son. He stayed with us for some time in our apartment on the 7th floor. Whenever he sang, his voice could be heard at the guardhouse on the ground floor. If anyone has recordings of Bhai Jaswant Singh & Bhai Pal Singh Ji (Jasa-Pala) to share, please contact us.
