Bhai Jotvir Singh (Jalandhar)

The young and upcoming jatha consisting of Bhai Jotvir Singh, Bhai Tajinder Singh and Bhai Harjot Singh visited Malaysia in 2018 and I had the pleasure of recording them a few times. Bhai Jotvir Singh started off his journey into Gurmat Sangeet by learning tabla from his father, Sardar Gurdeep Singh Ji. He had a keen interest in music from a young age and used to perform Kirtan regularly in the local Gurughar opposite his home in Jalandhar. He also furthered his training in tabla from Ustad Shanbir Singh and Ustad Kulwinder Singh. At the same time, he also pursued vocal training and deepened his knowledge of Raags. While he was a student in Guru Nanak School, Jalandhar, he took part in various competitions at district and state levels. After graduating from school, he went on to learn Kirtan from Bhai Rajbinder Singh Ji who operates the Guru Ramdas Gurmat Sangeet Academy in Jalandhar. Bhai Rajbinder Singh Ji is the son of the legendary Kirtani, Bhai Gyan Singh Ji Jogi.

Having built up a good foundation in tabla, Bhai Jotvir Singh Ji has used it to his advantage to perform in various Taals as well. In 2018, he formed a jatha and made his first tour abroad to Malaysia. He was accompanied on the side harmonium by his younger brother, Bhai Tajinder Singh who is also very talented and is blessed with a melodious voice. Accompanying him on tabla during this tour was Bhai Harjot Singh, who is the son of Bhai Rajbinder Singh Ji.
