Bhai Inderjit Singh (Bombay)

Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji is currently one of the senior Kirtanis serving in Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar. He performs a vast repertoire of Shabads and is proficient in Dasam Bani as well. His father, Bhai Tarlok Singh Ji was a well-known Kirtani who served as Hazoori Raagi in Gurdwara Janam Asthan Nankana Sahib. According to many senior Kirtanis who had heard Bhai Tarlok Singh’s Kirtan, he was very talented and blessed with a powerful voice. After the division of Punjab, they relocated to the village of Kalo Majra in Rajpura tehsil of Patiala district. Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji has five other siblings; two brothers and three sisters. One of his brothers, Giani Jaswinder Singh Ji was the former head Granthi of Harmandir Sahib.

Bhai Tarlok Singh Ji passed away on stage while doing Kirtan during the Shaheedi Purab of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. After his passing, their mother raised them singlehandedly and instilled many qualities within them from a young age. According to Bhai Inderjit Singh, she taught them about the importance of sharing their food. Each time their mother cooked, she would send them to deliver a portion of the food to their neighbours. She also brought them to the village Gurdwara everyday and taught them about Sewa.

Having music in his blood, Bhai Inderjit Singh was drawn to music from a very young age. He used to sing songs of Yamla Jatt and various other singers. One day, as he was walking down the narrow village alley singing a tune, he was approached by one Master Lal Singh from his village. Master Lal Singh rhetorically asked him “Being the son of a Giani, why are you singing songs?” Those words pierced deeply and he had a life changing moment. He was only 10 years old at that time. Following that incident, he went to learn Kirtan from Sangeetacharya Prof. Tara Singh Ji who used to teach at Punjabi University, Patiala. At that time, Dr. Gurnam Singh Ji was also learning from Prof. Tara Singh Ji and was his senior. The first Raag he learned was Bilawal and subsequently went on to learn many other Raags as well. He was also taught the art of performing Asa Di Vaar. He was taught using the Tanpura and not on a harmonium. He learned continuously for 2 years but then got busy with his formal education. Due to that, he had to juggle between his studies and music. Whenever he was free from school, he would go to Prof. Tara Singh Ji for lessons. Sometimes he would have to take a break from music and focus on his studies. Along his journey, Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji also met many other knowledgeable musicians from whom he picked up many lessons.

At one point in time, he decided to go to Bombay. He stayed at one of the local Gurdwaras as a Sewadar. While serving there, he learned how to play the harmonium and occasionally sang a Shabad or two during programs. He also did not have much knowledge about Gurbani at that time, so he began Gurmat studies while in Bombay. He then went back to Patiala to sit for some exams and one day after completing his exams, he went to Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib and did an Ardas asking for the gift of ‘Kirtan’. Shortly after this, he ended up in Paonta Sahib, from where his Kirtan journey began. Prior to this, he did not have a ‘jatha’ and it was in Paonta Sahib that he found his ‘saathis’ to accompany him. He served in Paonta Sahib for approximately 2 years before heading back to Bombay.

Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji has been blessed with three children; two sons and one daughter. His youngest son, Simranjeet Singh is also following in his father’s footsteps. He accompanied Bhai Inderjit Singh Ji in Harmandir Sahib for one and a half years, sitting behind him with the ‘Surmandal’. He also plays the mandolin. Currently, he is living in Bombay and does Kirtan on his own.

Most of the recordings below are from his visit to Malaysia and Singapore in the mid-1990s, before he started his service in Sri Harmandir Sahib. During this tour, he was accompanied on tabla by Bhai Gurjinder Singh, who also accompanied Bhai Kishanpal Singh Ji to Malaysia in 2000.
