Bhai Baljeet Singh (USA)

Bhai Baljeet Singh Ji was born to Mata Balbir Kaur Ji in the city of Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh, India on 18th March 1974. His father, Bhai Gajjan Singh Ji is a renowned tabla player in the field of Kirtan and Gurmat Sangeet. He is a disciple of the great Prof. Darshan Singh Ji Komal, who had trained thousands of Kirtanis such as Bhai Dharam Singh Zakhmi, Bhai Didar Singh, Bhai Beant Singh Bijli and many others. Bhai Gajjan Singh Ji was born in the village of Masanian in Jalandhar but lived in Chak 263 in the city of Lyallpur before the division of Punjab. Having narrowly escaped to East Punjab during the partition, Bhai Gajjan Singh embarked on a new journey in India. He had the desire to learn music but was unable to focus on his goals due to the horrible circumstances following the partition. It wasn’t until he heard someone mention the name of Prof. Darshan Singh Komal, that he was able to find a true purpose. He went to Komal Ji one day and requested to learn tabla from him. This was the beginning of his journey as a musician and Kirtani. He learned from Komal Ji for several years and during this time he had proven himself to be a great student. Then, Komal Ji started to take Bhai Gajjan Singh Ji along to different cities and villages for Kirtan programs and Raag Darbars.

Having being influenced by his father from a very young age, Bhai Baljeet Singh Ji began his training in music from his father at the young age of seven. His father initially trained him to play the tabla. After several years of learning, he used to accompany his father’s jatha for Kirtan programs. While playing the tabla, he also used to sing and perform ‘Alaaps’ and ‘Parmaans’. Recognising his interest in singing, Bhai Gajjan Singh Ji started to teach him the basics of vocal training. A few years later, Bhai Baljeet Singh came under the guidance of his second teacher, Bhai Rajinder Singh Ji, who currently serves as a Hazoori Raagi in Takhat Sri Hazoor Sahib, Nanded. Subsequently, he went on to learn from Prof. Partap Singh Ji from Delhi.

Bhai Baljeet Singh formed his own jatha in 1996 and performed Kirtan across India and also travelled abroad to many countries including the United Kingdom, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Canada and the United States (US) between 1998 to 2006. Their jatha performed in Washington DC in 2006 during an interfaith concert at Pope John Paul Hall and at the White House. Later on, they performed at various cities and states across the US which finally led them to Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2007. Their performance was much appreciated by the Sikh Sangat of Grand Rapids that they were requested to be a part of their community. In 2009, Bhai Baljeet Singh Ji settled permanently with his family in the Grand Rapids, Michigan. Currently, he performs Kirtan regularly with his wife, Jasmeet Kaur and his children, Rabina Kaur and Tejeshwar Singh.

With the grace of Waheguru Ji, Bhai Baljeet Singh Ji has recorded a Gurbani Kirtan album titled ‘Simar Mana’ featuring the popular Bollywood playback singer, Shreya Goshal. This album was recorded under the supervision of Gurmeet Singh in Mumbai, Chennai and London. In London, the recording was done and mastered in the world-famous Abbey Roads Studios, which was used by the English band ‘The Beatles’ to record most of their albums. Accomplished musicians from the London Telefilmonic Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra have provided accompaniment on this album. It is the first of its kind in the field of Kirtan.

The voice of Bhai Baljeet Singh Ji continues to enchant listeners worldwide through his mesmerising Kirtan. His message to all his listeners is to stay connected with Gurbani and listen to Kirtan devotedly. If anyone has more recordings of Bhai Baljeet Singh Ji to share, please contact us.
